This year Maui Waena's Technology Club has been very busy. We've entered more contests and have done more videos for the community than usual. Though its been hard and stressful, it was good practice for one of our major competitions STN which we won 1st place twice and an honorable mention. One of the 1st places was for the Sweet 16 which is a group project where you pick one word out of 16, and make a 16 minute video in 16 hours around the topic.
We also won first place for our spot feature, a two-person competition where you get a topic (Texas Tradition) and have 2 hours to film and 3 hours to edit and end up with a final product of a 90second video. The honorable mention we were awarded for was our music video. We had three hours to film and three hours to edit the video on the song we picked " Life is a Party " by Midnight Mirage.
To prepare for these competitions we practiced and practiced! On weekends we went to school at 6 in the morning and didn't leave till 11 at night trying to figure out teams and practicing for sweet 16. We also took on projects for the community to help us. One project that we took on and are still currently working on, is for Maui United Way. They gave us a list of their partner agencies and we chose 5 to feature in a video to help showcase the amazing work these non-profits do in our community. We are working on creating five feature stories which will be put together to make a 12-15 minute video that will be shown to different companies to encourage donations.
Along with all of this video work, we also competed in three major robotics competitions. First, we participated in the Maui County Vex tournament and came in second place. Our team then went on to the Pan-Pacific competition on Oahu and were able to compete against teams from around the world. From more than 120 teams we placed 49th.
First Lego League was our next competition. We did not do as well as we wanted but did win the "Cooperation" award for teamwork.
We are currently working on Botball, which is our biggest and most challenging competition of the year. We came in 2nd place last year, losing only to the international champion Hanalani, and are setting our goals for this year high.
Doing all these things can become quite expensive, from buying or fixing equipment,t to paying the fee for contests. The travel to the various competitions is also very costly. Because of this, we are always looking for sponsors, donations, or fundraising opportunities. Any support would be much appreciated and very helpful. Welcome to the home of Falcon Entertainment & Engineering --Fe2--where students from Maui Waena Intermediate School discover the exciting world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) through real life, project based activities. These dedicated students meet everyday after school (and Saturdays too during robotics seasons) to become better thinkers and communicators. Check our our site to see what we are all about!
