School year 2013-14 was a whirlwind year. We started off by competing in VEX robotics at the County Fair, in which we had two teams, one of which made it all the way to the finals. In this competition, we learned a lot about building, programming, and working as a team. Our next robotics competition was in May and ended much more successfully. We placed 6th overall in the regional Botball tournament. We also garnered the Judge's Choice award for our outstanding use of sensors and had perfect scores on our documentation and onsite presentation. It was an amazing experience and we are all looking forward to this year's Botball in May of 2014.
Our video program did an amazing job this year. We started off by earning an honorable mention in the Student Television Network's Fall Challenge. We went on to win Olelo's Healthy Living PSA
Our big adventure was our journey to the STN Convention in Orlando, FL. Twenty-three students participated in breakout sessions, onsite competitions, and networked with students from across the nation. We practiced for months to be prepared, and it paid off. We placed 1st for our Sweet 16 Broadcast, 3rd for our commercial and received an Honorable Mention for our Music Video. The students learned so much there, about video, about storytelling, and about thinking on the spot and working together.
To prepare for these competitions we practiced and practiced! On weekends we went to school at 6 in the morning and didn't leave till 11 at night trying to figure out teams and practicing for sweet 16. We also took on projects for the community to help us. One project that we took on and are still currently working on, is for Maui United Way. They gave us a list of their partner agencies and we chose 5 to feature in a video to help showcase the amazing work these non-profits do in our community. We are working on creating five feature stories which will be put together to make a 12-15 minute video that will be shown to different companies to encourage donations..
Doing all of these activities can become quite expensive, from buying or fixing equipment, to paying the fee for contests. The travel to the various competitions is also very costly. Because of this, we are always looking for sponsors, donations, or fundraising opportunities. Any support would be much appreciated and very helpful.
